What Is Ovine Brucellosis?

Ovine brucellosis is an infectious disease of sheep primarily associated with Brucella melitensis. It is an important reproductive disease in small ruminants and is also a significant zoonotic concern.

In infected sheep, the disease may cause abortion, stillbirth, weak offspring, infertility and retained placenta. However, clinical signs may be limited or absent in some infected animals, making identification based on clinical observation alone difficult. Infected animals can also continue to shed Brucella organisms after clinical recovery.

 

Where Is It Commonly Found?

Ovine and caprine brucellosis remains an important concern in many sheep- and goat-producing regions. According to the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH), higher incidence is reported particularly in parts of the Middle East, Mediterranean region, sub-Saharan Africa, China, India, Peru and Mexico, while several countries and regions have achieved or maintain freedom from the disease.

Transmission is closely associated with reproductive events. Infected ewes can release Brucella through placental tissues, fetal fluids and vaginal discharges, creating opportunities for infection within a flock.

Importantly, WOAH notes that no single serological test is suitable for every epidemiological situation. Test selection and interpretation should consider the animal population, vaccination status, disease prevalence and the purpose of testing.
