Description

How do dogs get Giardia?

Dogs become infected by ingesting Giardia cysts.

But how can a dog come into contact with a cyst? You may want to know.

One way comes from the environment. For example, if a dog drinks contaminated water that contains the feces of an infected animal, which contains the cystic form of Giardia, the dog will become infected.

Contaminated water sources include ponds, streams, puddles, etc. Giardia cysts may also be present in the soil and grass where infected animals have been to the toilet. Giardia cysts are very hardy-as long as the environment is humid and not too hot, they can survive in the environment for several weeks.

Dogs can also swallow or ingest Giardia cysts through contact with another dog infected with Giardia.

Once a Giardia cyst is ingested by a dog, it enters the dog's small intestine. There, it opens and releases the active form of the parasite, which attaches to the intestinal wall and begins to multiply through cell division. Then it will wrap itself again and be excreted through the dog's feces.
