Description

Giardia

Giardiasis is an extremely common infection caused by the intestinal protozoan Giardia. It affects the digestive systems of humans and many animals worldwide, including dogs and cats.

In North America, it is reported that about 8% of dogs are infected with Giardia, and the infection rate in puppies is much higher (36% to 50%). Animals in shelters and kennels have a much higher risk of giardiasis—up to 100%.

People can also be infected with Giardia. Animals are often more resistant to it than humans. However, if an animal does not have a strong immune system, it will not be able to fight infection and will become a victim of parasites.
